New Show – Empire

I found this show, Empire, listed on FOX’s website as an upcoming show. I kept waiting for it to premiere and now it has. I really liked the first episode. I don’t think it should be dismissed as a “black show”. The majority of the cast is black but I think the plot will be similar to any gangster/business focused show where people are trying to get ahead. Lucious Lyon is a former drug dealer turned hip hop mogul. He discovers he has ALS also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease and now thinks about who will take over his company, Empire Entertainment, when he’s gone.

His options are one of his three sons: Andre, Jamal, or Hakeem.

Andre is the CFO and the oldest. He’s married to a (white) girl he met in school. He thinks his father dislikes him the most even though Jamal is hated. His wife suggests letting his brothers destroy each other so the company will be there for the taking, but Andre is working his own angle as well.

Jamal is a singer/songwriter that likes to collaborate with his younger brother, Hakeem. Lucious is very disappointed that Jamal is gay and tells him he can choose to be straight to have a music career. Jamal is reluctant to put out an album of his works and likes to play small clubs. He seems to have no interest in running the company probably because it represents his father. Cookie, his mother, has been supportive of him being different since he was a child.

Hakeem, the youngest, is everything you think of when you hear young male rapper. He is all about partying and very little about handwork. Since his father has been an artist, Hakeem is probably given more chances/help with his career. He seems to like his brother Jamal and goes to him for music advice.

You would think that would be enough drama for the show but no. Cookie, Lucious’s ex-wife and the mother of all 3 kids, is just out of prison after 17 years. It looks like she took the fall for her and Lucious’s drug business. Now that she is out, she wants half of the company. But, the company has changed. Lucious has a board of directors and is about to go public. Cookie is trying to find a way to get what she is owed which may involve being the manager for one of her sons.

I’ve thought and seen references to the show being like King Lear or The Lion in Winter. My favorite so far is Jamal. I like that he is just gay. He’s not over the top gay like people seem to like to put on TV. All the people that don’t know gay men will think they are all drag queens or leathermen if they have to learn from just TV. It was the same with black people being portrayed on TV at one time. Every little bit helps.

The show should be interesting with the fighting between brothers and ex-spouses, parents with children, and Lucious’s illegal past coming to light.
